Squirrel Nut Zippers!

I hear these guys have reformed and are touring. The odds that they’ll show up anywhere near the Black Swamp seem a little slim, but you never know…

I’m not sure Katharine Whalen can act even by the lowish standards of music video, and I’m not even sure she sings that well–her voice is sometimes a little ragged in live performance–but I love the big cartoony verve with which she tackles a song.

  1. Ha. I’d never seen her before, and I agree with your assessment. I liked her side project after SNZ though, but I am glad to hear that they’re reforming. I’d like to hear them live.

Have you heard White Ghost Shivers? Very similar sound.

Thanks–and I certainly second you on KW’s solo stuff and hearing these guys live. Although apparently they haven’t reconciled with former Squirrel Nuts Maxwell and Mosher…

I’ll have to check out White Ghost Shivers; thanks for the tip.

Zippers! Great stuff. (Well, not the video.) Haven’t heard them in a long time.

These guys really did have an interesting eclectic sound. Here’s hoping the revival isn’t just a ghost band.

I saw them perform years ago on Letterman or Leno or one of those, and it was a fun show. I just spent some time on youtube… I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they’re video challenged.

I think that’s true. “Ghost of Stephen Foster” is probably their only video that manages to look professional (by adopting the look of an old Max Fleischer cartoon).
