This Crooked Way is now in stock at Amazon.com. It should be hitting actual shelves in brick-and-mortar stores fairly soon.
It’s already been reviewed, not wholly favorably, by Publishers Weekly. (They didn’t like the ending though they say nice things about some of the episodes.)
Congratulations, James. It looks great!
Thanks! I should scan some of the interior pages and post them. They got Chuck Lukacs to do interior decorations and a map, and the whole thing is extremely well-designed.
That would be cool! Although I’ll be getting my own copy at some point, of course.
Congratulations. Bad notices are better than no notices at all.
I think.
Generally, yes. Even a bad review has (occasionally) prompted me to buy the book, especially if I disagree with the reviewer’s reasoning, and this wasn’t really a bad review.
So, congratulations!
Thanks to you both–and I think you’re right. Anyway, Peadar has the right slant on reviews, I think. I collect them as data points but try not to weep over them.
Amazon just informed me my copy will be here on Thursday, instead of 10/29.
I don’t think that’s such a bad review. They liked This Crooked Way enough to want to read the sequel.
And on an unrelated note, damn, that Cherie Priest is certainly prolific, isn’t she?
“I don’t think that’s such a bad review. They liked This Crooked Way enough to want to read the sequel.”
Absolutely–it’s not a knife-job, by any means.
“And on an unrelated note, damn, that Cherie Priest is certainly prolific, isn’t she?”
I’m not keeping count, but I’m certainly intrigued by her upcoming “Boneshaker”.
Woo hoo! I’ve really been looking forward to this one, PW review or no PW review. At least “achingly precise prose” is a nice descriptor.
Thanks! And, you’re right, that “achingly precise prose” thing went straight to my Smug File. Although I guess you could read it a couple different ways. (I put that in my Anti-Smug File.)
Looks gorgeous!
Thanks! Looking forward to “Child of Fire” myself.
I have Blood of Ambrose on my to-read shelf, but I’ve been so disheartened by my reading pace that my current book is this one.
I know what you mean. But I’m starting to think I need to start reading even slower–I’m not getting all the flavor from the books I’ve been reading lately.
Congratulations, Mr. Enge. I certainly look forward to getting my copy soon. Will you be picking up the gauntlet that PW has thrown down? Just curious.
Again, well done. –Jason T
Thanks! Re the PW reviewer… Wolf Age is well underway, and I’ll make it the best book I can. It’ll be very different from either BoA or TCW. I hope they like it, but I’m sure I’ll like it.
A long teaching day has rendered me literal-minded. I’m stuck picturing broadsword duels between reviewers and writers. You’d think PW would refrain from throwing gauntlets down before fantasy authors, since sooner or later they’d find one who was serious about weapon research in a firsthand kind of way.
I’ll be sprinting through my teaching prep, the better to dive into the book as soon as it arrives at my local B&N.
I’m less like Conan and more like Cugel, though–“I prefer to run, but I will fight if I must”.
Hope your prep goes well. I’m teaching a new course next semester and I’m freaking out about it a little.
Wheee!
Thanks! Hope you like it.
