The Hound of Heaven
I had a dream the other night about Lennie Briscoe, intrepid dog detective. He was still alive, but ailing. We consulted an innovative and probably deranged veterinarian who replaced Lennie’s ruined organic spine with a cybernetic one and also (for … Continue reading
Activity Dog
A fairly typical photo of Reuben Sandwich (PhD, MVP, DOG): lying on someone’s foot, waiting for something to fall from the table, taking a refreshing nap, with a toy near at hand (or tooth).
The Eye of the Beholder
Just got back from a midnight run with Reuben Sandwich, D.O. (Doctor Olfactantissimus). I saw a smoky red half-moon hanging somber in the western sky. Reuben saw about fifteen thousand sinister bunnies, only three of which were evident to me.
Of Stars and Dogs
I took Dr. Reuben Sandwich (PhD, JD, DOG) out for a midnight run last night. Just as we left our driveway, I looked up and saw a meteor streak across the Summer Triangle (formed by Vega, Deneb, & Altair). I … Continue reading
“Numberless Are the World’s Wonders…”: Clifford Simak’s CITY
Here’s Davis Meltzer’s cover for the 1970s-era Ace edition of Clifford Simak’s City, an early entry onto my “Always Reread” list. I disliked this cover when I was a kid because of the anthropoid greenmetal skull with human teeth. Now … Continue reading

Small and/or Fuzzy
D adopted a new friend. It’s a little too soon for me, but her canine pal left us almost 2 years ago; she’s been pretty patient. So: meet Reuben Sandwich, PhD. Dr. Sandwich is five years old. His research interests … Continue reading
Pointing Toward the End
Wearing my grading face (which strongly resembles Mung making the Sign of Mung).

The Final Problem
This is going to be a tough post to write—no easier because I’ve seen it looming for a while. Lennie Briscoe, the Great Detective, has gone to investigate the ultimate mystery. His spine gave out last night and we just … Continue reading
Let’s Give Vespasian a Great Big Hand
Prandente eo quondam canis extrarius e trivio manum humanam intulit mensaeque subiecit. —Suetonius, Divus Vespasianus 5.4 “Once, while he was having lunch, a stray dog carried in a human hand from the crossroads and threw it under his table.” This is one of the … Continue reading
